Sesser-Valier-Woodlawn had no trouble at Elverado Monday night, moving to 3-2 on the season with a 62-30 win.
S-V-W jumped on top 24-5 after one period and led 40-11 at the half to put the game away early.
“We got out to a big lead because of our pressure defense,” Sesser coach Brian Gibson said. “We are doing a better job of turning the opponents turnovers into points.
“We struggled offensively in the first part of the second quarter,” he added. “We didn’t score a field goal the first four minutes, but played better the rest of the half and the first part of the third quarter.”
The Red Devils took a 52-19 lead into the final period.
Sesser had balanced scoring, with Emmalee Metcalf scoring 12 points, with Cheryl DelBene and Ashley Slack adding 11 points each.
“Cheryl DelBene played her best game of the year,” Gibson said. “She scored all 11 of her points in the first half, played great handling the ball and starting our offense, and she also played great defense on their best ballhandler.
“Chelsea Knight came off the bench and also played her best game of the year,” he added. “She scored six points on strong post moves and was a force on the boards when we were in a little foul trouble the first half.”
The game was the opener in Black Diamond West play for both teams.
“This wasn’t a pretty win by any means,” Gibson admitted. “We continue to struggle with some of the basics. Our schedule in December is going to be tough, and we need to improve if we expect to get through the month with a winning record.”
S-V-W will host Woodlawn Wednesday night.
