Benton, Ill. -

After a slow start, the Benton Rangers moved the football in the annual scrimmage game at Tabor Field Friday night.

After a couple of penalties — one erasing an 80-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage by Travis Crawford — the Benton first-team offense was buoyed by a 35-yard pass completion from Quincy Hamilton to Trevor Myers and a 12-yard run by newcomer Jake Yarnell.

That started a string of four touchdown drives for Benton in the scrimmage. Hamilton hit Hunter Clark for a 33-yard score, Hamilton called his own number on a 63-yard run for paydirt, Yarnell pounded in a score from a yard out and Tim Corn hauled in a 70-yard catch-and-run TD to complete the scoring.

When the team’s first-string defense entered for the final 12 minutes, it allowed the offense to barely penetrate midfield.

Mark Uhles and Cortez Henderson blew up the first two plays from scrimmage for losses, with Ryan Stevens, Sam Breeden and Jordan McMahon coming up with good plays as the quarter quickly ended, Stevens picking up a sack.

The second-team offense got two nice catches from Jake Gibbs in the sequence.

The night started off with the freshman and sophomore Rangers showing some big-play ability.

Freshman quarterback Tyler Leffler threw three touchdown passes in the opening scrimmage. Leffler hit Mason Childers on scoring strikes of 15- and 37-yards and connected with Jake Harris on a 7-yard pass.

Sophomore quarterback Kyler Smith had a big game when the sophomores took the field, scoring on a 73-yard TD run and hitting Frank Parola on a 71-yard touchdown pass and Damon Wilson on a 32-yard screen for a score.

Troy Timmons, Derek Butler, Wyatt Tate and Colby Allen each had sacks.

Eric Price had an interception and Harris had a fumble recovery on defense.

Tyler Arnett also had a nice sequence of blocks on a huge run by Smith.

Benton will open its season next Friday night when it travels to Nashville.
