Sesser-Valier steamrolled Webber Township 71-31 Tuesday night to complete opening round action at the annual Christopher Turkey Tournament and, in the process, give new head coach Chip Basso his his first coaching victory.

The Red Devils got a combined 28 points from their two-time all-tournament selections Justin Matyi and T.J Eubanks. Matyi led the way with 15 points and Eubanks tossed in 13, including three 3-pointers. Dane Eubanks scored 10 for the Red Devils.

“Our size alone was such a factor,” Basso said. “We got away from our inside game a little bit but finally got it going.”

The Red Devils trailed 3-0 early but reeled off 10 straight points to go ahead 10-3. T. Eubanks and D. Eubanks had treys during the run. D. Eubanks added two free throws and T.  Eubanks had a basket inside. Following a Webber basket, the Red Devils responded with a basket by Myles Tinsley and 3-pointers by Tinsley and T. Eubanks to go  ahead 18-5.

A trey by Ethan Gowler brought the Trojans back to with 10, but Matyi hit a short jumper before the first quarter horn to put the Red Devils ahead by 12.

Basso substituted liberally the rest of the way and his team didn’t miss a beat. The Red Devils led 33-13 at halftime and 55-18 after three periods.

Despite the lopsided score Basso was complimentary of the Trojans and coach Sam Root.

“He did what he had to do to put them in a position to win,” Basso said.

A total of 15 players saw action for the Red Devils and 12 scored.

Wayne City outscored Egyptian 12-5 in overtime to earn a semi-final berth against Sesser Valier on Friday night.

The Indians and Pharoahs were tied at 39 at the end of regulation.

Cody Thomason led the Indians with 16 and Zack Merill had 15, including 9 points in overtime.

Sheldon Pender led Egyptian with 11 and Matt Petermichel had 10.
