SMAC - Bad Weekend? Just Blame Canada

I was having a good weekend until it happened. I’m not obsessed with the Olympics or with hockey for that matter, but if you weren’t glued to the screen for the gold medal match between US and Canada Sunday ... all I can say is love it or leave it.

Let me go back a couple of days first.

Friday was a mixed bag. Benton lost its regional final, but Sesser and Woodlawn both won titles. So I still have a couple of teams alive as sectionals begin. That’s good, I hate missing those sectionals. I’ve always thought that the sectional semifinals are better than any supersectional game, anywhere.

And the game got over kind of quick. I was done updating the web by midnight, so that was kind of a good start to the weekend.

Saturday was a really long day.

I was meeting someone for lunch and I didn’t have that great of a time. It kind of put me in a bad mood.

So I decided to head down to Carbondale to kill some time. I called a friend of mine and she got off work at 9 p.m. So I had some time to kill, which was good.

Of course, my main stop was Barnes and Noble. And it was great, I walked to one of the big comfy chairs just as someone got up, so I spent a couple hours there and re-read the book “Who’s Your Caddy” by Rick Reilly — a great read.

Then there were the usual stops at the usual places, but for some reason I felt the need to hit up Big Lots. I have only bought a few things there in my life, but I decided to go. I did find “Philadelphia” on DVD for three bucks, so I was glad I went.

Until I got to the parking lot.

I was walking back to my car and passed a vehicle that was parked. When I got close, the lady inside hit the lock button — I could hear it.

Am I that threatening?

That really made me think. I just sat in my car for a few minutes retracing my steps to see if I went towards the car aggressively or something. I thought about going over and asking the lady what was up, but it was getting late, so I just left.

Well the rest of the night was fun, so I came home pleased with my day.

And then I hit the ice.

And when the US tied the game with 24 seconds left to send the game into overtime, I thought Team Canada was going down.

But just a few minutes later Sidney Crosby scored to give Canada the Gold.

I was so mad. I wanted to find Bryan Adams and beat the Canuck out of him.

I was disoriented — when I finally realized what I was doing I was in Christopher for some reason.

Well, that stuck a big bad note on the end of my weekend. But, you have to take the good with the bad.

And it’s always good to have an excuse for the bad times anyway.

I’ll just blame Canada.
