Benton’s cheerleaders are headed back to the IHSA state tournament.
A fifth-place finish at Saturday’s Highland sectional secured the team its second straight trip to U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington for the competitive cheerleading state tournament.
This will be Benton’s second appearance in the IHSA state series which began in 2005-06.
The 25 teams advancing from sectional competition will compete on Friday, the Top 10 advancing to Saturday’s finals.
Benton advanced to Bloomington in the small team division. Columbia (88.03), Breese Central (84.87), Sesser-Valier (84.57), Nashville (79.97) and Benton (79.60) advanced from the 13-team sectional. Other teams entered were: Carterville, Murphysboro, Woodlawn, Christopher, Okawville, Pinckneyville, Carlyle, and Flora.
Other squads advancing to the small school state competition are: Elmhurst Timothy Christian, Sterling Newman Catholic, Stillman Valley, Westmont, Sherrard, Eureka, New Berlin, Tremont, Williamsville, Riverton, Lexington, Wilmington, Paxton-Buckley-Loda, Dwight, Braidwood (Reed-Custer), Kincaid, Paris, Windsor, Bunker Hill, and Effingham St. Anthony.
This weekend’s IHSA state series will start two weeks of state competition for the Benton cheerleaders. Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association championships will be held February 13-14 at Prairie Capitol Convention Center in Springfield.
