Chester's Lady Jackets traveled to neighboring Steeleville on Jan. 20 for a nonconference match-up.
The Jackets led, 15-2 after one quarter of play, 30-7 at halftime, 40-9 at the end of the third quarter and 48-14 at the final buzzer. It was a true team effort for the Jackets, as nine different players contributed offensively to the 34-point victory, and the entire 14-person roster played in the game.
In the opening quarter the Lady Jackets outscored the Lady Warriors, 15-2. CHS was paced by Destiny Williams who drained a three-pointer and a basket. Senior Trinity Brown made a pair of field goals. Sophomore center Alyssa Seymour hit a basket and two free throws and Kendall Williams contributed two points.
Steeleville's Kadence Bockhorn scored the only two points for the Lady Warriors as Chester led, 15-2 at the end of the opening period.
The second quarter was another 15-point effort by the Chester crew. Junior Kendall Williams led the charge with three field goals for six points. Junior Reese Chandler popped a three-pointer, and Destiny Williams and Trinity Brown made baskets. From the bench, Jessica Kattenbraker made both of her free throw attempts.
Coach Pat Knowles utilized a total of nine players in the first half for a major team effort.
The second time around Steeleville picked up its offense, as Jenny Wedemeyer drained a trey and Jaden Hinnerichs added two points. Chester led, 30-7 at halftime.
Coach Pat Knowles used his bench in the third quarter as the Jackets scored 10 more points. Kendall Williams connected for a pair of field goals and Reese Chandler drilled another three-pointer. Destiny Williams scored on a driving layup and Josie Kattenbraker made one-of-four free throws.
Chester's defense was splendid once again in the third period and held Steeleville to just one basket by Hinnerichs. The kids from Chester led, 40-9 after three quarters of action.
In the fourth quarter Coach Knowles used Destiny Williams for just a brief stretch to start the quarter. Otherwise, the bench took over and ran the show the rest of the game. In the final 8 minutes CHS scored eight points: Katie Shinabargar hit a field goal; Kailyn Absher, a sophomore, made back-to-back shots; senior Audrey Hopper had a basket.
The Lady Warriors added five points down the stretch as Mia Masterson drained a three-pointer and a two-point field goal.
