Harrisburg moved to 2-0 on the season and got a game-high 21 points from Lydia Miller in a 62-41 win over Mt. Vernon Thursday night in the home opener at Davenport Gymnasium.
The win was also no. 173 for Harrisburg head coach Jake Stewart, who is now 27 wins away from 200. The former Harrisburg standout in his playing days is starting year 9 on the sidelines.
Harrisburg shot 36 percent from the field and was 44 percent from the free throw line, while limiting the Rams to 30 percent shooting from the field and 10-of-23 or 43 percent from the free throw line.
Miller had a double-double for the Bulldogs, grabbing 13 rebounds, while shooting 8-of-11 from the field and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Essence Sanders, who just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, was followed in scoring by eight points from both Summer Sanders and Lauren McDaniel. Stream Black scored seven points, while Lauryn Gribble and Kailyn Moss each tacked on two points. Lexi Williams and Chelsea Davidson each tossed in a free throw for one point.
Harrisburg (2-0) will now play host to four other teams in the annual Harrisburg Invitational, kicking off its 34th season Monday at Davenport Gymnasium.
Harrisburg will play West Frankfort on Monday night, followed by taking on Carmi Wednesday night. On Friday, the Bulldogs will play Anna-Jonesboro and wrap up the invite against Eldorado on Saturday night. All games will begin at 7:30 p.m.
