Eldorado starts season on right foot

The Eldorado girls' basketball team put four players in double figures as the Eagles knocked off Goreville 54-47 Thursday night in the season opener for EHS.
Eldorado jumped out to a 17-2 first quarter lead as Paige Munds and Emma Wargel each scored 13 points a piece. Lexi Mitchell and Lily Mosby both had 11 points, while Karis Lane scored six points for the Eagles.
In addition to holding off Goreville, who outscored Eldorado 24-22 in the second half, the Eagles knocked down 14-of-18 free throws.
Goreville (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season, despite getting a game-high 20 points from Kelsey Ray.
Sam Licka tacked on 10 points to finish in double figures for the Blackcats, while Hallie Martin scored seven points and Adrianna Licka chipped in with six points. Abby King and Katie Benard both had two points.
Eldorado returns to action Monday in the Harrisburg Invitational, playing Carmi at 6 p.m.
The Eagles will take on Anna-Jonesboro Tuesday at 6 p.m., followed by taking on West Frankfort Friday at 6 p.m. EHS will close out the tournament against Harrisburg at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
