The Chester High School Lady Jackets Volleyball Team improved to 7-6 overall and are undefeated in the Black Diamond Conference with their win over the Christopher Lady Bearcats last week.
"The varsity played smart tonight," said Head Coach Sarah Norman. "We came out of Christopher with a win. The varsity is also undefeated in conference play at 2-0 and a record of 7-6 overall."
There were seven players who made major contributions to the victory. Junior Kendall Williams led the team in assists with 19. She also added 3 kills, an ace and two digs.
Reese Chandler, another junior, led with three aces and seven digs. She also contributed four kills.
Juniors Lauren Soellner and Josie Kattenbraker tied for the kills lead with five apiece. Soellner recorded one assist block and two digs while Kattenbraker had six digs in addition to the team-leading five kills.
Lauryn Vasquez added two kills, 1 assist block, two aces, and three digs in the win. Vasquez is a senior. Senior Grace Stec banged four kills and had one assist. Finally, Ashtyn Jany, a senior, recorded four digs to help her fellow teammates win against the Lady Bearcats.
Chester accomplished the win in two decisive, identical sets, 25-13 and 25-13 to get the victory and remain undefeated in the BDC.
Labor Day tourney
Meanwhile, the Lady Jackets finished eighth out of 12 teams in the highly competitive Marissa-New Athens Labor Day Tournament Sept. 3-6. The Jackets were fourth in the silver bracket matchups and eighth overall.
Chester's Reese Chandler joined 11 other players on the 2019 All-Tournament Team including Jayl Holcombe and Jamie Russel from East St. Louis; Ande Grohmann and Ashlyn Wightman from Gibault; Bella Pasquino and Elaine Shaneyfelt from Pinckneyville; Rayahna Foutch and Kolbie Martin from Trico; Paige Hand from Marissa-Coulterville; Danika White from New Athens and Emily Otteensmeier from Wesclin.
Gibault was the overall tournament champion in the Gold Division followed by Red Bud, 2nd; East St. Louis, 3rd; Pinckneyville, 4th; Marissa/Coulterville, 5th; New Athens, 6th; Trico, 7th; Chester, 8th; Wesclin, 9th; Lebanon, 10th, Okawville, 11th; and Steeleville, 12th.
The Lady Jackets opened their home competition at CHS Colbert Gym on Tuesday this week vs. Trico and will play Vienna at home today (Wednesday). They will hit the road again Thursday at Goreville.
