PINCKNEYVILLE -- Trailing 4-1 to Carlyle midway through the second half, the Pinckneyville Community High School soccer team caught a break when Cameron Hawk lifted a 30-yard shot from the right sideline that found the upper left corner of the net.
Then, Luke Chapman booted in a goal when two defenders shielded the Carlyle goalie, and the Panthers closed to within 4-3 with about a minute to go in the match.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Panthers could get as Carlyle took home the Saturday morning win at the PCHS soccer complex. The Panthers' Derek Rohlfing had scored the tying first goal in the first half before Pinckneyville gave up the three goals for the visitors' lead.
The Panthers have road games this week at Murphysboro and Salem and Carterville (Thursday).
