MARION -- The Marion High School girls basketball team made just one field goal in the first half Monday and lost 52-20 against Massac County on the opening night of the Heartland Regional Lady Cat Tip-Off Classic at Cuss Wilson Gymnasium.
That lone field goal, which was scored by freshman Margaux Bruce, tied the game at 6-6 with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.
Massac County finished the half on a 20-2 run with Farrah Castleman scoring half of those points. The run would eventually reach 29-3 after the break.
Marion's second field goal didn't come until Massac had built a 35-9 lead in the third quarter. Sophomore Maegan Dillon converted that shot, then freshman Grace Connor and senior McKenzie Orange both had two buckets.
Castleman led all scorers with 13 points, followed by Madie Coakley (9), Camryn McBride (8), Bailey Duckworth (7) and Kendra Waldon (7).
Orange led Marion with five points. Connor had four. Dillon and Bruce both had three.
Also contributing free throws for Marion, which went 8 of 20 at the stripe, were Quinisha Emanuel, Lauryn Kadela, Daishen Wolaver and Jackie Drury.
In the early game, Haleigh Keeling hit three free throws in the final 4.1 seconds to lift Vienna to a 40-37 win over Herrin.
Herrin's Regan Deaton hit a 3-pointer to put the Lady Tigers up 34-33 with 3:40 left, but a basket from Vienna's Addison Bent put the Lady Eagles in front.
It was tied at 37 and appeared headed for overtime when Keeling was fouled with 4.1 left and made both free throws.
Herrin then turned the ball over and Keeling split a pair for the final margin.
Keeling and Alyssa Jones both had 11 points and Bent had 10 for the Lady Eagles.
Layla Wade led Herrin with 14 points. Deaton had nine and both Madisyn Blankenship and Grace Lehnhoff had six.
The five-night tournament features Marion playing Hamilton County at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Marion facing Herrin in Friday's final session at 5:30 p.m., followed by Hamilton County against Vienna to end the round robin event.
