DU QUOIN -- The Du Quoin High School volleyball team overwhelmed Cobden 25-16, 25-20 in a non-conference match Monday night.

The win improved Du Quoin's season record to 23-11 heading into Wednesday's Senior Night clash with Herrin.

The Lady Appleknockers dropped to 14-12.

A huge kill by Elizabeth Bird gave Du Quoin a 21-11 lead in the first game, which was played quickly.

The second game was tied nine times with the last coming at 10-10 before an ace by Meryn Gross was followed by kills from Ayanna Dunklin, Bird and Lauren Heape to give the Lady Indians a cushion.

Du Quoin was ahead 24-13 but had trouble putting the Lady Appleknockers away. Cobden pulled to within 24-20 and forced a timeout, but Bird pushed a two-handed tip to the left that dropped in for the final point.

Bird finished with seven kills, seven blocks and two aces. Haley Williams, behind several early kills, finished with eight to lead the team. Heape added six and Cravens finished with five.

Gross racked up 20 assists and had two kills and two aces.

In the back, Katie Smith came up with eight digs and Morgan Bullar had seven, with several other players contributing to the defensive effort.

Du Quoin's match against Herrin on Wednesday will complete the regular season.

The Lady Indians host the Du Quoin 2A Regional next week starting with Chester against Red Bud and Sparta facing Sesser-Valier in quarterfinal matches on Monday starting at 5:30 p.m.

The semifinals will be Tuesday, also starting at 5:30 p.m., with Pinckneyville facing either Chester or Red Bud and then Du Quoin playing either Sparta or Sesser-Valier.

The championship will be Thursday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Red Bed Sectional.
