CARTERVILLE -- The Pinckneyville High School girls golf team topped Massac County by a stroke at the SIRR Conference tournament, but the Lady Patriots were too strong to overtake Wednesday at the Carterville 1A Regional.
Massac County had five players shoot in the 80s and rolled to the championship with a 325 total, but Pinckneyville came in second at 355 and advances along with Carterville (421) to the Centralia Sectional on Monday.
None of those teams had the individual medalist. That honor went to Murphysboro senior Hannah Gahagan, who carded a 79.
Massac's Millie Lawson, Madie Coakley and Mady Blair all shot 80 on the winding Crab Orchard Golf Club layout. The fourth score of 85 came from Lily Conkle, and Madison Cunningham's score of 89 didn't count for the team but placed 10th overall.
Pinckneyville's Megan Breslin also shot an 80 to tie with the Massac trio for second behind Gahagan. Sarah Breslin was alone in sixth as the only player in the regional to shoot 82.
Graci McDaniel's score of 88 placed ninth and helped the Lady Panthers place third. Kally Mayo provided the fourth at 105.
Carterville's Ali Lamb placed seventh at 84 and will be joined by her team at sectionals. The Lady Lions' other scores were from Alexis Nolen (100), Madison Campbell (117), Bailey Shoemake (120) and Heidi Gentry (120).
Carterville's total edged Herrin by three strokes for the third advancing team spot.
Herrin is still sending four players to the sectional, however, in the list of qualifying individuals not on an advancing team.
Advancing for the Lady Tigers were Paige Wieland (96), Sydney Nugent (101), Zoe Williams (113) and Brenna Gusewelle (114).
The sectional will be held Monday at Greenview Golf Club in Centralia. Players then try to advance to the 1A state tournament in Decatur.
