MT. VERNON -- Nicole Szidik and Margaux Bruce have both had a strong few days for the Marion High School girls tennis team.
On Saturday, Szidik and Bruce won both of their matches at Fairfield's tournament. Then on Monday, they both won in singles and teamed up for a doubles win as Marion downed Mt. Vernon, 8-1, in a dual match.
In the tournament, Szidik won a tiebreaker to beat her opponemtn from Olney 7-5, 6-4, then rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 over Fairfield's entry. Bruce did the exact same, winning against Olney's player 7-5, 6-1 and then sweeping Fairfield's 6-3, 6-1.
"Bruce did a great job (Saturday)," said Marion coach Carrie Watson. "I forced her to move up in the lineup so that she could start playing tougher competition. She did not disappoint.
"Nicole made quick work of her opponents. She is peaking at just the right time."
On Monday, Szidik rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Priyanka Kaushal and Bruce outlasted Cammy Conley 7-5, 4-6, 10-1 in a match that lasted 2-1/2 hours.
Marion made it a clean sweep of singles with wins from Carrie Graham, Sophia Arnold, Paula Diederich and Aubrey Reichert.
Szidik and Bruce played doubles and beat Kaushal and Conley 10-4, then Graham and Diederich held on for a 10-7 win. Mt. Vernon's lone point came at No. 3 doubles with a 10-8 win against Arnold and Paige Newlin.
"A good performance by all," Watson said. "Our only conference loss was to Carbondale. We need this momentum as we head towards the conference tournament on Saturday."
The Lady Wildcats indeed travel to Belleville for the South Seven Conference tournament on Saturday but first head to Carmi on Wednesday.
