Golfers avenge season's only loss

Benton High School's golf team avenged its only loss of the regular season last week with a victory over Herrin during a five-team match at the Benton Country Club.
The Rangers, now 11-1, fired a team total 145, beating the Tigers by 10 strokes. West Frankfort was third with 159, followed by the Benton JV squad with 169. Du Quoin also participated, finishing with a 194. Herrin defeated Benton earlier this fall, ending the squad's string of 60 consecutive regular season victories.
Brad Hammond was the match medalist with a 35. Teammates Robbie Moore and Eldon Owens were a stroke back with 36s and Jared Shaw and Cole Brugger each logged a 38. Brendan Luster rounded out the Benton scoring with a 39.
The JV squad was paced by Collin Miller's 41. Parker Sieveking, who also ran in a cross country meet on the same day, shot a 41. Brett Merkel and Keaton House rounded out the scoring with 44s.
Benton was scheduled to play at West Frankfort on Tuesday and will participate in the Marion Invitational today starting at 1 p.m.
