Du Quoin sweeps through own tournament

DU QUOIN -- The Du Quoin High School volleyball team swept through its own Du Quoin Invitational tournament on Saturday and is now 9-2 this season.
The Lady Indians defeated Goreville for a second time in the championship match 25-10, 25-15 to clinch it.
Elizabeth Bird had 10 kills and Meryn Gross had 18 assists and four kills, while Lauren Cravens added four kills and both Katie Smith and Morgan Bullar had seven digs. Olivia Dill served five aces in the title match.
To get there, Du Quoin took on Herrin for the second time this season and won 25-20, 25-20.
Bird had 10 kills and three aces, Gross had 16 assists and four kills, Cravens added four kills, Smith had 13 digs and Bullar had 11 against the Lady Tigers.
In pool play, Du Quoin swept Christopher 21-8, 21-4 as Bird swatted 10 kills, Gross racked up 14 assists and Bullar had six digs and two aces.
The first match against Goreville was a 21-8, 21-14 win featuring nine kills from Bird. Gross had 17 assists, Bullar had eight digs and Cravens put down five kills.
Du Quoin's other pool play match was a 21-7, 21-11 sweep of Wayne City.
Bird had seven kills, Lauren Heape had four kills, Gross had 13 assists and Dill served three aces.
The Lady Indians also received strong play from Delaynie Dearmond, Grace Alongi and Lexi Cobin along the way.
Smith, Bird and Gross were named to the all-tournament team.
Du Quoin plays at Elverado on Tuesday.
