Pinckneyville, Du Quoin play five matches at SIRR Preview tourney

CARTERVILLE -- Pinckneyville took second place in the Gold division and Du Quoin won the Bronze bracket after a long day of volleyball Saturday at the SIRR Conference Preview Tournament held for the first time at Carterville.

Pinckneyville swept its pool play matches against Carterville, West Frankfort and three-time defending champion Massac County, then beat Benton (25-21, 20-25, 15-11) but lost to Nashville (25-20, 25-15) in the Gold finals.

Nashville swept Benton (25-18, 25-18) to claim the overall championship after sweeping Du Quoin, Herrin and Harrisburg during pool play. Massac County went on to win the Silver division.

Du Quoin's loss to Nashville came in its first match of the day (25-20, 25-18) and the Lady Indians stayed on the court and lost to Harrisburg (25-22, 25-21) but later outlasted Herrin (21-25, 25-23, 15-8).

The Lady Indians swept Anna-Jonesboro (25-21, 25-13) and held on to beat Carterville (28-26, 23-25, 15-13) in the Bronze crossover matches.

Du Quoin's Elizabeth Bird and Pinckneyville's Hallie Waggoner were named to the all-tournament team.

Bird had 34 kills and 24 blocks to lead the Lady Indians in their five matches. Lauren Cravens added 14 kills and four blocks, while Delaynie Dearmond and Haley Williams both had 13 kills. Williams also had eight blocks.

Meryn Gross had 66 assists on the day -- the next closest was Williams with four -- while Gross and Morgan Bullar both served a team-high five aces. Katie Smith collected 56 assists, with Bullar next at 29 and Grace Alongi marked for 28.

Du Quoin plays its home opener Tuesday night at home against West Frankfort, then hosts the eight-team Du Quoin Invitational on Saturday.
