Benton Community High School's golf team opened its season this past Saturday, winning the 13-team Anna-Jonesboro Invitational at the Union County Country Club.
The Rangers, with a team total 308, outdistanced second place Herrin by seven strokes. West Frankfort was third with 334, followed by Anna-Jonesboro (337) and Marion and Massac County, with 338s.
Benton's trio of Brendan Luster, Robbie Moore and Brad Hammond all fired a 76, good for a tie for fourth place individually. Cole Brugger fired an 80, tying for 15th place. Herrin's Drew Ringle was the match medalist.
Also playing, but not included in the team scoring, were Eldon Owens with an 86 and Jared Shaw with a 91.
Team scores, after the first five places, included: Nashville 342, Trico 359, Hamilton County 374, Chester 391, Steeleville 411, Harrisburg 426 and Goreville 432.
Benton hosted a quadrangular match at home Tuesday and will host Murphysboro today. Invitationals are scheduled this weekend in Champaign and Massac County.
