INA -- Jaiveon Eaves hit three quick 3-pointers in the opening minutes and the John A. Logan College men's basketball team rolled to a 96-61 victory over Lincoln Trail College in Wednesday night's quarterfinals at the NJCAA District 16 Tournament at Rend Lake College's Waugh Gymnasium.
The trifecta by Eaves gave the Vols a 9-2 start, then David Sloan added a layup and Damion Taylor took in a dunk. When Vonnie Patterson and Derek Hawthorne Jr. popped in 3-pointers of their own, Logan had a 23-8 lead.
"That was all in the flow of the offense," said JALC coach Kyle Smithpeters. "They did a really good job of moving the basketball. We didn't settle and didn't take a lot of bad shots."
Jonah Jackson and Ronnie Carson added to the scoring as Logan built a 40-19 lead before Lincoln Trail went on an 8-0 run. The lead was 45-29 at the break thanks to free throws by Carson with 0.9 left on the clock.
The Vols kept pushing in the second half.
Quamain Nelson converted a big putback and Romelo Burrell threw down a big alley-oop slam dunk before Eaves splashed in two more triples to increase the lead to 79-47.
Logan also got points from Will Keller, Aaron Twist and Antwan Campbell in the final minutes.
Eaves led the Vols with 17 points and Patterson had 15.
Sloan, as usual, stuffed the stat sheet for 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
"His teammates sure enjoy playing with him and that's exciting," Smithpeters said. "He makes everybody out there so much better and gets them involved. That's what you want from a point guard."
Carson had eight points and 10 assists, Burrell and Taylor also finished with eight points and Hawthorne had seven.
Jackson hit two triples for six, with Campbell, Nelson and Twist all netting four. Nelson also had seven rebounds. Keller had two and Marion's Justin Shadowens played the final five minutes but missed his only shot attempt.
LeArron Cain had 23 points and Casius Bell Jr. had 18 for Lincoln Trail, who finished 10-21 with a roster entirely of freshmen.
"We were trying to speed them up offensively with our defensive adjustments and I think we did a good job of that," Smithpeters said.
Logan (26-5) advances to face Southwestern Illinois (24-7) in Thursday's semifinals, with hopes of advancing to Friday's championship. Both game times are scheduled for 8 p.m.
SWIC made it out of the quarterfinals by beating Olney, 104-101 in overtime, when Jaalam Hill drilled a halfcourt shot at the buzzer. The Storm inbounded the ball with 1.6 seconds left. Hill caught a pass, took one dribble and one step, then heaved in the game-winner to stun the Knights.
In the other quarterfinal games, top-seeded Vincennes (30-1) rolled to an 81-45 win over Kaskaskia and Shawnee (19-11) advanced with a 68-65 win over Wabash Valley.
