MARION -- A big run in the second quarter turned the tide and allowed the Marion Junior High School boys basketball team to remain undefeated Monday night.
The Wildcats trailed Mt. Vernon by four points in the second quarter but went on an 18-0 run and eventually blew out the visitors, 65-40, to improve to 12-0.
Mt. Vernon led 18-15 after the first period and was up 22-18 before the Wildcats went on their big run. The flurry was capped by a 3-pointer from Rayzhaun Bardo, who had four triples and 14 points in the frame.
Bardo finished with seven treys and 31 points for the game. He also had five rebounds and three steals.
Marion went into halftime with a 36-22 lead and was up 51-31 at the end of three quarters.
"We took a huge step forward as a team tonight and learned how to play under control when facing some adversity," said Marion coach Bradley Griffith. "If they continue to learn how to harness their talent and stay disciplined, special things can happen for us."
Venson Newsom added 12 points and four steals. Isaiah McLorn had eight points and seven rebounds. Deavon Margrum hauled in five rebounds and Devyn Wright had four points and four steals.
Marion's junior varsity team also won and is now 11-1.
