DU QUOIN - The Sesser-Valier Red Devils opened the basketball season on Monday at the Du Quoin Tip-Off Classic. The Red Devils lost the game to the Cairo Pilots, 71-64.

The story of the game for the Red Devils was turnovers.

"Cairo forced tons of turnovers and we never could get into any offensive rhythm," Coach Shane Garner said. "We had 19 turnovers in the first half and at least that many in the second half."

The Red Devils were without their senior point guard Lukas Gunter. Cairo applied a lot of defensive pressure.

The Pilots led 21-13 after the first quarter and 41-35 at half. Cairo was leading 59-47 going into the fourt quarter.

"We could never get over the hump. We chipped away at the lead, but turnovers cost us the game," Garner said.

Tyler Winchester led the Red Devils with 23 points. Peyton Rock added 13 points. Also scoring for the Red Devils were Eli Gunter (9), Josh Gunter (8), Preston Launius (6), Addison Page (3), and Kadin Kiselewski (2).

The Red Devils return to action on Friday night against the host team, Du Quoin, at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, they will play Carmi-White County at noon and Massac County at 6 p.m.
