DECATUR -- John Bruce was individual runner-up by the slightest of margins and the Marion High School boys cross country team did enough Saturday at the Decatur MacArthur Sectional to advance to the 2A state meet for the second straight year.
Charleston senior Nick Oakley was ruled the race winner in a time of 15:00.68 with a nudge at the finish line. Bruce, a sophomore, was given an official time of 15:00.69.
Marion's point total of 125 tied with Waterloo behind Chatham Glenwood (79) and Springfield (92) and being in the top four teams meant going back to Peoria's Detweiller Park as a team.
Michael Rutkowski placed seventh (15:23) and Levi Bryant was 16th (15:40), with Julian McPhail coming in 49th (16:25) and Joe Sullins placing 51st (16:28).
The IHSA's state cross country finals are this coming Saturday, with the 2A boys race scheduled to begin at noon.
