BENTON -- No matter what happens in Benton's final regular season game Friday at Anna-Jonesboro, the Rangers are guaranteed a winning season.

Benton has not had a winning season since 2013. That team went 9-2 -- completing a three-year winning streak for the Rangers.

Ironically, the Rangers picked up their 500th win in school history this season. Since 1916, BCHS has won 504 football games, according to Illinois High School Association records.

"These kids have already accomplished some tremendous things for Benton football. Certainly, we are blessed to be part of a winning record and so many exciting moments this season from a great group of kids," said coach Bob Pankey. "This team definitely elevated the program, which is something you want to see happen year in and year out. But I know they won't be truly satisfied unless they can find a way to get into the postseason. So, that's what we continue to fight for."

A victory this week would seal a postseason ticket for the Rangers. A loss would definitely hurt the Rangers chances of playing an extra week.

Benton comes into the contest with a 5-3 record while the Wildcats are unbeaten in eight games.

Anna-Jonesboro has been one of the best teams in Southern Illinois in recent years. The Wildcats won the conference title outright this season after being edged out by Du Quoin a year ago.

The Wildcats are led by all-purpose back Jayce Turner and running back Arieh Hart.

"A-J has a full arsenal of weapons. Turner is a really good running back but they also have Hart who is a really athletic player," said Pankey. "Their quarterback (Bryce Osman) is a senior who does a nice job of running their style of offense. Their run game is really tough."

Benton's offense sputtered in last week's 19-14 loss to Murphysboro. The Rangers gained just 134 yards on the ground and quarterback Hamilton Page had an off night. Page completed just five passes for 80 yards. He also threw an interception.

"Our offense definitely wasn't clicking Friday night and we never really found our groove, especially with the pass game," Pankey said. "I think it's important now to continue to refine what we are good at, clean up any mistakes we found and not overreact. We have kids who have been making plays all season long and I have confidence they will rebound and continue to make plays.

"Last Friday was a setback for us, but our goal is still the same and the players are still focused on reaching those goals," Pankey said. "This group (of kids) competes to the end."

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday
