Prep Volleyball: Harrisburg shines at Herrin

The Harrisburg volleyball team wrapped up a long week with a third place finish at the Herrin Invitational, going 4-1 against the competition.
The Bulldogs notched wins against Fairfield (25-17, 25-11), Crab Orchard (20-25, 25-14, 25-18), Carterville (25-11, 25-18) and New Athens (25-23, 27-25) with the lone loss coming to Marion (25-13, 25-17).
In the invitational, Devin Butler quarterbacked Harrisburg with five aces, two blocks, 62 assists and 19 digs. Josie Drone finished her day with five kills, one block and 22 digs, while Reagan Thompson had five aces, 21 kills, two blocks and 11 digs.
At the net, Bryleigh Buchanan wrapped up her day with five aces, 24 kills, 11 blocks and 28 digs, while Matty Hawkins had five aces, 18 kills and 13 blocks and Madeline Rider had seven aces, 11 kills and 34 digs.
Butler, Hawkins and Buchanan each made the All-Tournament Team with Buchanan coming out as the top vote getter.
Prior to the Herrin Invite, Harrisburg dropped its first conference match of the season, falling at home to Murphysboro 25-16 and 26-24.
Buchanan had two kills and three blocks, while Hawkins had nine kills and two blocks.
Butler finished her night with 20 assists, while Drone came up with 18 digs and four kills. Rider had three kills and 16 digs and Thompson finished with an ace and four kills.
The Harrisburg freshman and junior varsity also lost in two sets to Murphysboro.
On Tuesday, Harrisburg knocked off Benton in straight sets, winning 25-16 and 28-26.
Hawkins led the charge with 12 kills and five blocks, while Buchanan finished with 10 kills and Butler came away with 27 assists on the night.
Harrisburg is now 14-6 overall and 3-1 in Southern Illinois River-To-River Ohio play. The Bulldogs are at Herrin (tonight) Tuesday in their only match of the week.
