SPARTA -- Drivers battled the weather, mud and each other, but in the end, Derek Mearns took home first place in the semi-stock feature race of the Sparta Days Demolition Derby on Friday.

Colby Rakers finished second, with Travis Smith, Ryan Mearns and Ty Richards rounding out the top five in a field of 17 cars.

Other winners included Jeremy Roberts (mini-car auto cross), Kyle Heimann (full-size auto cross) and Jerry Kunz (Mini Car derby). The event also featured a minivan division for the first time, with Alex Heine besting "Batman" in a two-car derby.

Up next for drivers is the Perry County Agricultural Society's Demolition Derby on Saturday, April 29, at the Perry County Fairgrounds in Pinckneyville. Admission for the event, which starts at 6 p.m., is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12.

Those age 5 and under get in free. Pit passes are $25, with riders at $30.
