Dear Editor: In recognition of National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week, May 6-12, and on behalf of Heartland Regional Medical Center, I want to share my appreciation for our nurses who make it possible for us to be a health care resource for our community.

We thank them for their continued dedication to providing high-quality care and improving the overall health of the Marion region.

The theme of National Nurses Week this year is "Inspire, Innovate, Influence." In a time of change in health care, Heartland Regional Medical Center nurses continue to accept new challenges as opportunities to better serve the needs of our patients, to develop innovative approaches to providing quality health care services, and to positively influence patients and their families along their health care journey.

From the nurses who welcomed our newborn patients this year, to those providing specialized care, thank you. To nurses and staff working tirelessly to provide 24/7 emergency services, and to those caring for patients and families in their final stages of life, thank you. To the staff who provide warm and calm reassurance to worried patients in the middle of the night, to holding a hand, to taking blood pressure and to being a helpful resource to patients and their families, thank you.

During National Nurses and National Hospital week -- and every week -- please join me in saluting the outstanding nursing and hospital professionals in our community who are committed to providing safe, quality and compassionate care throughout the Marion region. You inspire, innovate and influence our lives every day.

Melisa Adkins, CEO
