Phyllis A. Dagg Beard, 73, of Mt. Vernon died at 7:39 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2009, in St. Mary’s Good Samaritan RHC in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with Brother David Shores officiating. Burial will be in Kirk Cemetery in Ina. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 9, 1935, in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Homer A. and Janie M. (Stone) Dagg. She married Ronald Beard who preceded her in death in 1971.

Mrs. Beard had worked as a cook at Opal’s Restaurant, as a maid at a local motel and as a homemaker. Her hobbies included bingo and a love for animals.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a son, Homer E. Beard of Carbondale; nieces and nephews, Larry and Cheryl Colp of Christopher and Janie and Joe Lowe of Mt. Vernon; several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law Bobby Beard and many friends.

Her parents, husband, two brothers, one sister, one nephew and a great-nephew preceded Mrs. Beard in death.
