Dave Atchison, 51, of Benton passed away at his home in Benton on Thursday evening, June 18, 2009, in the arms of his loving wife.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the First Christian Church in Benton with Pastor Kurt Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery in Whittington. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church.
The Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Benton-West City Ministerial Alliance; envelopes will be available at the church.
Dave was born in Chicago Heights on Aug. 14, 1957, the son of Cecil L. and Mary Adeline (Horner) Atchison.
He married Gloria June (Harper) on Aug. 13, 1988, in Calvert City, Ky.
Dave was a member and deacon of the First Christian Church in Benton.
He was an active member and board member of the Benton-West City Area Chamber of Commerce, from 1994 to the present. He had served as president for three of those years.
He was an active member of the Benton Rotary Club and had served as president. he was a 1975 graduate of Benton High School.
He was a big supporter and performer with CASA of Franklin County.
Dave was involved with the Benton-West City Ministerial Alliance. He had started the Benton Rotary and Benton-West City Chamber of Commerce and Franklin Hospital annual golf scrambles.
He had chaired the Rend Lake Water Festival. Dave was named Benton Citizen of the Year in 2006. He was a major dreamer and motivator of the Benton-West City Chamber Development. He served on the board of Downtown Benton, Inc.
Dave was the executive director of the Independent Electrical Contractors of Illinois; the state of Illinois was his district.
Dave is survived by his wife, Gloria Atchison of Benton; father, Cecil Atchison of Benton; sister, Connie Cook and husband, Craig, of Thompsonville; brother, the Rev. Cecil Robert Atchison and wife, Sharon, of Marion; brother-in-law, Bob Harper and wife, Mary, of Paducah, Ky.; nieces and nephews, Kent Atchison and wife, Tara, Melonie Shelton and husband, Michael, Christie Charlton and husband, Tim, James Cook and wife, Jessica, David Blandford, and Steve Blandford and wife, Becky; and several great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and his uncle, Bert Atchison.
