Dorothy Monroe Swinney, 88, of Benton died Wednesday morning, Jan. 27, 2010, at her home.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, at the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton, with Pastor Kurt Sanders officiating. Family and friends will meet at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home at noon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

She was born June 17, 1921, in Benton, the daughter of Martin Gentry and Maude (Robinson) Monroe.

She married William Joplin Swinney, M.D., on July 18, 1940, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 2003.

Mrs. Swinney enjoyed playing golf, pinochle, poker and bridge.

Mrs. Swinney is survived by her daughter, Nancy Durham and husband, Chuck, of Metropolis; son Steve Swinney and wife Sibyl of Benton; grandchildren, Stephanie Calvin of Grand Chain and children Jessica and Kyndra, Greg Swinney and wife, Kim, of Benton, Heather Franklin and husband, Michael, of O'Fallon and their children Emma and Kaylee, Sara Holman and husband, Justin, of Benton and their children Dash and Charlie; step-grandchildren, Ronda Baker-Dunn and husband, Randy, of Murray, Ky., and their children Sara, Gavin, Erin and Lindsey, Beth Baker of Destin, Fla., and her daughter Lea, and Preston Baker and wife, Amy, of Benton and their daughter Brittney.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother Dr. John Monroe.
