David J. "Umpy" Otten, 76, of Chester, Illinois, passed away at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2020 at Memorial Hospital in Chester.

He was born to the late Paul and Marion (nee Smith) Otten on April 1, 1943 in Chester. He married Barbara Almasy on Dec. 24, 1985 in Walsh, Illinois; she survives.

David was a food supervisor at Menard Correctional Center in Chester for more than 20 years. He also owned and operated Umpy's Bowling Alley in Chester for more than 30 years.

He enjoyed spending time on his farm. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #3790, V.F.W. Post #3553, American Legion Post #487, Marine Corps League, Elks Lodge #1629 and Eagles Club Aerie #3252, all in Chester.

He was a Southern Illinois University of Carbondale alumni and a Vietnam Marine Corps veteran.

David is survived by his wife, Barbara Otten, of Chester; stepson Gary (Tammy) Klein of Sparta; stepdaughter Tricia (Chris) Becker of St. Charles, Missouri; brother Steve "Red" (Sandy) Otten of Chester; two nephews, Brian (Becky) Otten of Pinckneyville and Bradley (Audrie) Otten of Chester; two great-nieces, Aubrey and Samantha Otten; four stepgrandchildren, Joel (Katie) Klein, Cody (Marci) Klein, Jacob Becker and Amanda Becker; three step-greatgrandchildren, Lilly, Roman and Gracie Klein and one step-greatgranddaughter due in June.

David was preceded in death by his parents.

It was David's wishes to be cremated. A Memorial Mass with Military Honor Inurnment will be held at a later date.
