Jack Carter of Sparta, formerly of Du Quoin

SPARTA -- Jack D. Carter Sr., 67, of Sparta, formerly of Du Quoin, passed away on Monday, Feb. 25, 2019 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis.

Jack was born on March 8, 1951 in Du Quoin. He married Mary Sue Hutson on Oct. 3, 1970 in Du Quoin. He was a coal miner for 38 years. Jack loved the outdoors, especially hunting. He was also a talented woodcarver.

Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Sue; children, Ina (Gregory) Poole of Ellis Grove, Amy D. Carter of Sparta, and Jack D. (Angela) Carter, Jr. of Baldwin; grandchildren, Ethan (Danielle) Poole, Mallory Poole, Sawyer (Heather) Poole, Austin D. (Olivia) Carter, Anthony Carter and Andrew Carter; great-grandchildren, Amelia Poole, Lillian Poole, Carter Poole and Violet Carter; three brothers, Don Carter of Marion, Thomas (Carol) Carter of Ava, and Allen (Lyn) Carter of Du Quoin; four sisters, Karen Carter of Du Quoin, Pat (Odell) Lively of Du Quoin, Joyce (Mac) Johnson of Murray, Kentucky and Terri Carter of Du Quoin; one brother-in-law, John (Donna) Hutson of West Frankfort; and three sisters-in-law, Judy Wright of Ina, Lois (Elmo) Kelly of West Frankfort and Carol (Curtis) Wright of Christopher.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian (nee Hawkins) Conaway, and one sister-in-law, Barb Smith.

Visitation at Heil-Schuessler & Sinn Funeral Home in Sparta is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m., immediately after the visitation.

Burial will be at Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta.

The funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
