Melvin Garniss, 74, of Chester, passed away at 8:56 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 at his residence.

He was born to the late Melvin Eggley and Agnes (nee Hamilton) Garniss on June 14, 1944 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He married Ruth Kopp on March 2, 1974 in Chester, Illinois; and she survives.

Melvin worked as a Security Therapy Aide at Chester Mental Health Center for 27 years. He enjoyed fishing and building model airplanes.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Garniss of Chester; three children, Raymond (Wendy) Garniss of Sault Ste. Marie; Brian (Erica) Garniss of Defiance, Mo., and Mark (Rachel) Garniss of Chester; one sister, Lori Wieringen of Alpine, Michigan.; two brothers, John Garniss of Sault Ste. Marie and Russell (Sandy) Garniss of Green Bay, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Ben Grah, Gage Garniss and Kayla Garniss; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Angela Etta Garniss.

Funeral services begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Pechacek Funeral Homes, Chester, with the Rev. Dennis Scoville officiating. Interment will be at Paradise Cemetery, Steeleville.

Visitation is from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Pechacek Funeral Homes, Chester.
