Dr. Homer Harvey Hanson, 95, of Carbondale, formerly of Murphysboro, passed away at 8:18 a.m. Sunday, April 15, 2018, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
He was born July 9, 1922, in Murphysboro to Homer Sylvester and Daisy (Harvey) Hanson. He married Amber Borah June 17, 1968.
Dr. Hanson received his pre-medical education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, attended medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine-Chicago followed by a residency in pediatrics. After completing the residency program, he passed his board certification, the American Board of Pediatrics. He returned to southern Illinois, where he joined the Carbondale Clinic in 1954 as the first board certified pediatrician in all of southern Illinois. He also had affiliations with Doctor's Hospital in Carbondale, which is now known as Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He went through the chairs of the Jackson County Medical Society and rose to the presidency thereof.
He has been a member of Murphysboro First Presbyterian Church since childhood.
Since his retirement, he enjoyed the hobby of stained glass.
Dr. Hanson was a 50-year supporter of Southern Illinois University Carbondale basketball and football.
He and his beloved wife Amber loved to travel and have been to all seven continents.
Dr. Hanson is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Amber Hanson of Carbondale; nephew Carl N. (Diane) Seals of Shelbyville, Ind.; niece Sandra (David) Grepp of Solon, Ohio; great-nieces and -nephews Leslie, Isaac, Elizabeth, Michael and Allison; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Rosemary Seals; and brother-in-Law Carl Seals Jr.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Crain Pleasant Grove-Murdale Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation at the funeral home at 11 a.m. with Pastor Sam Foskey officiating. Entombment will follow at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made in Dr. Hanson's honor to Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's athletics, the Carbondale Public Library or Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
