Hans Bank, 83, passed away at 3:35 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2 at his home surrounded by loving family. Hans was born on July 29, 1934 in Köln, Germany to Barbara and Peter Bank.

He was a talented fine instrument maker for more than 30 years employed by Southern Illinois University until his retirement in 2000. His incredible skills and research in instrument making contributed a lot this field. If he couldn't build it, it couldn't be built. This was a passion and lifelong hobby for him.

He also enjoyed music, hunting, building anything from clocks to toys for grandchildren, and he enjoyed a good beer.

Hans was united in marriage with the love of his life, Marlis (Kramer) Bank, on April 21, 1957 in Köln, Germany. They spent more than 60 wonderful years together.

He is survived by wife Marlis Bank of Murphysboro; three sons, Achim (Patti) Bank of Carterville, Knut (Pamela Fischer) Bank of DeSoto, and Klaus (Martha) Bank of Glendale, Missouri; six grandchildren, Kristen (David) Scott, Jamie (J.D.) Steffen, Nichole (Anthony) Marx, Justin, Ryann and Kirsten Bank; eight great-grandchildren, Katie, Jimmy and William Scott, Alissa and Andrew Steffen, Braidon Bank, Kaiden and Jaycee Marx and his sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews in Germany.

He is preceded in death by sister Marianne Scheel; and parents Barbara and Peter Bank.

Services for Hans will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale.

Memorials can be made to American Heart Association or the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
