Franklin County has a new ambulance service provider.
The Franklin County Board met in executive session followed by committee meetings prior to Tuesday night’s regularly scheduled meeting that included a decision on the provider.
The packed county board room included emergency responders and Abbott EMS representatives who listened as board vice chairman Danny Melvin reported the findings of the request for proposal that resulted in a decision among three applicants.
Melvin said he and board chairman Randall Crocker had interviewed the current ambulance service Cardinal EMS, MedForce of Saline County and Abbott EMS.
Crocker asked for a motion to accept Abbott’s proposal, which was unanimously approved.
Later in the meeting, Crocker introduced Abbott EMS general manager Mark L. Corley, who said the ambulance service serves Missouri and Illinois and would be responsible for the operations in Franklin County when the provider assumes its role within the next 90 days.
Corley introduced Scott Tiepelman, manager of Illinois operations, who said he is happy to be working with the county for a long time to come.
Corley said a lot of work lies ahead for Abbott EMS before they assume the contract adding they would be working with the county’s 911 service, emergency management agency and the sheriff’s office.
New ambulances are also in the works, Corley said, adding that the company would be looking to hire locally to provide services for county residents.
Under the contract, residents of Denning and Frankfort townships in West Frankfort will continue to receive service from the West Frankfort Fire Department emergency medical service personnel.
According to the website, Abbott EMS, Inc., was founded in 1969 to serve St Louis County with one ambulance and 12 employees. The company has grown to become the largest private ambulance service provider in the Midwest.
