At Tuesday’s meeting of the Rend Lake College Board of Trustees, new student trustee Caleb Buntin of Thompsonville was officially seated for the coming year.
Buntin replaces outgoing student trustee Kody Schwarze, who was presented a plaque by board chairman Dave Edmison for his service. Edmison thanked Schwarze for the valuable insight and comments he has provided to the board over the past year.
In formal action, the board accepted the low bid of $102,300 from Joiner Sheet Metal and Roofing, Inc., of Greenville for the Science Building roof replacement project.
Seven bids were received. Protection, Health and Safety funds will be used to pay for the project.
The board also granted permission to seek bids on two other projects. One is Welding Lab Phase III, which includes 11 welding booths on the north end of the existing lab at an estimated cost of $84,994. The expenditures for the booths and accessories, estimated at $78,379, will be funded by the Department of Labor grant.
All costs associated with the in-house renovation work to prepare for the new booths, estimated at $6,615, will be paid with institutional funds.
Permission also was granted to bid five automation training units at an approximate cost of $55,000. The purchase is necessary to meet the needs for Continental Tire of the Americas Inc., a partner in the Department of Labor Community-Based Job Training grant.
The purchase also will contribute to the sustainability of the college’s Industrial Electronics and Maintenance program after the grant period. The equipment will be purchased with grant proceeds.
In other action, the board accepted with regret the retirement resignations of:
• Ginger Hogan, administrative assistant in the Communications and Information Department, effective June 30. She has been employed full-time with RLC since October 1994.
“I have loved every day I have spent at Rend Lake College, the people I have worked with, and the students that I have come in contact with. Although I may no longer be the ‘Voice of Rend Lake College,’ I will always be a ‘Voice FOR Rend Lake College,’” Hogan wrote in her retirement letter.
• Bonnie Tolbert, Practical Nursing professor, effective May 31.
In her retirement letter, Tolbert wrote, “Mere words cannot express my feelings of fulfillment from my tenure here at Rend Lake College. I thank you for the opportunities for professional and personal development that have been provided to me during my time with the college. It has been an honor and privilege to be part of the ongoing mission of this highly respected institution.”

• Brenda Garvin, executive assistant to the Dean of Special Programs, effective May 31. She has been employed full-time since September 1997.
“I have worked for Rend Lake College for 18 years and made many lifelong friends. I have enjoyed working with dedicated faculty and staff who strive to help students meet their educational and personal goals,” Garvin wrote.
Additionally, the board accepted with regret the resignation of Shelly Kuhns, Allied Health Division chair, effective May 13.
“I have sincerely appreciated the opportunity to serve the students of the RLC district in this capacity for the 2010-2011 academic year. I have learned a great deal and will take that knowledge with me as I progress into new areas in my career,” Kuhns wrote.
The board also:
• Approved a new two-semester Culinary Arts occupational certificate as well as two new courses, Instructional Methods Workshop and Advanced Instructional Methods, and authorized their submission to the Illinois Community College Board for action. The two new courses are designed specifically for Rend Lake College faculty members who will be teaching online courses.
• Set the out-of-district tuition rate at $142.50 per credit hour beginning with Summer Term 2011. ICCB guidelines state that the college may set the out-of-district tuition rate for all other credit instruction offered by the college at a minimum of 1.5 times the highest in-district tuition rate of any of its neighboring contiguous college districts. It was determined that Southwestern Illinois College’s rate of $95 per credit hour was the highest and was used to compute RLC’s out-of-district rate.
