GateHouse Media, Inc., has reorganized its leadership structure recently (see related story) in Southern Illinois and has named a new publisher for this newspaper.
Jim Murphy was named as regional publisher of GateHouse’s Southern Illinois publications and also named group publisher of the The Benton Evening News, West Frankfort Daily American, Marion Republican and Du Quoin Evening Call, as well as the SI Trader and five other weeklies — including the Progress — and shoppers in the area.
Nick Monico, vice president for community newspapers of GateHouse Media Inc., announced the appointment.
Murphy comes to the area with a broad background in journalism at upstate New York newspapers including experience in editorial, advertising, digital and marketing operations.
Murphy was most recently a senior publisher in the Journal Register Company, overseeing four N.Y. daily and six weekly newspapers, a shopper, as well as affiliated Web sites.
Prior to that, he was an advertising and market development director for in two markets for Lee Enterprises in New York, and also oversaw the newspaper’s Web site in one of those markets, Glens Falls, which was named the best community Web site in the nation by Suburban Newspapers of America in 2009.
He was also sales development manager on Lee’s corporate sales team, responsible for rolling out retail sales initiatives and training across 54 daily newspapers and affiliated weeklies. Before joining Lee, Murphy was online manager for four years at The Observer-Dispatch in Utica.
Murphy started his career as a reporter and sports editor at several daily newspapers and spent a decade at The Catholic Sun, the Diocese of Syracuse, N.Y. newspaper, including six years as editor-in-chief/general manager. While editor-in-chief, the newspaper was named a finalist for newspaper of the year five times by the Catholic Press Association of the U.S. and Canada.
He was also named the International Young Journalist of the Year by the World Congress of the International Catholic Union of the Press, receiving the honor in Switzerland.
Murphy is a graduate of Alfred University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in community services administration, and has conducted additional graduate study at Syracuse University. He has taught as an adjunct professor at several colleges and is the recipient of 30 advertising, marketing and journalism awards, including Suburban Newspapers of America’s 2007 Advertising Director of the Year for daily newspapers.

He has served on board of numerous trade and civic organizations.
Murphy said about the appointment, “It is an exciting time in the newspaper industry as we improve and expand our product mix to meet the digital needs of our readers and advertisers. There has been more change in the newspaper industry in the last five years than in the previous 50. Most of us in this industry find managing the change exhilarating, challenging and sometimes even exhausting.
“But we are dedicated to continuing to be the news and information leaders in our respective communities with whatever platforms — digital, mobile or print — that consumers wish to access our content,” he continued. “It’s exciting because the transformation spurred by new technology will ultimately allow us to expand our coverage, encourage greater community participation in content creation and expand our market reach for advertisers.”
