Rend Lake College has announced the 2011 Kids Camp lineup. A wide selection of camps is being offered with various interests for students from Pre-K through the 8th grade.
Most camps will be held at RLC's main campus in Ina. However, select camps will be held in Mt. Vernon, Benton, and Pinckneyville.
Mt. Vernon Camps
BLAST! Babysitter's Club Camp will be held 9a.m. to 4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 20th-23rd at the RLC Marketplace in Mt. Vernon. RLC Instructor Leslie McKenzie will provide campers with training in Babysitter Lessons and Safety Training (BLAST!), a program from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Participants will learn how to provide care and how to use activities to engage children of all ages. They will also learn how to handle behavior problems. The BLAST! Handbook, a Babysitter Busy Bag, and certification in CPR/First Aid will be provided. Campers need to bring a sack lunch and drinks to camp each day. This camp is for ages 10+. The cost is $85.
Strike A Pose will be held 9a.m.-3p.m., Thursday, June 23rd at Studio RLC at the RLC MarketPlace. Campers will learn the latest fashions and trends, including the basics: skin care, make-up, nail care, latest hair styles, poise and etiquette. This camp helps develop self-confidence, personality and social skills. At the end of the day, campers will reveal themselves to friends and family during a runway walk. This camp is for grades 1st-7th. The cost is $40 and includes lunch. Campers are asked to bring their favorite outfits for the runway.
Pinckneyville Camp
Creative Adventure will be held 1-3p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 27th-30th at the Murphy-Wall campus. Instructor Candace Manning will have campers creating a variety of 2 and 3 dimensional art projects and participating in group challenges such as scavenger hunts. Creations and activities will derive inspiration from automotive designs, foreign cultures, exotic animals and artists who have shaped America. This camp is for PreK and Kindergarten students. The cost is $40.
Benton Camp
Outdoor Adventure will be held at the recently renovated Camp Manitowa by Lake Benton. There will be three different weekly sessions to choose from: 9a.m. to 3p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 13th-16th, June 20th-23rd, or June 27th-30th. This camp will give kids the experience of an overnight camp without spending the night. Campers will choose various activities including the high ropes (challenge course and zip line), low ropes (a team building trail), crafts, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and Rend Lake water activities. This camp is for grades 2nd-7th. The cost is $155. Campers are asked to bring a sack lunch, drinks, sunscreen, insect repellant, and swimming attire each day. (After-camp supervision is also available at $5 per hour paid directly to Camp Manitowa.)

Rend Lake College Campus Camps
Ag-ucation Discovery will be held 9a.m.-Noon, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14th-15th in the Applied Science building. Campers will discover kids activities centered around agriculture. Through creative play and exploration, children develop a connection with the land and an appreciation for growing their own food. They will also explore soil, crops, and tractor driving safety. Each day campers will experience and learn about different aspects of the farm. This camp is for grades 4th-6th. The cost is $30. Campers are asked to come dressed in old clothes ready to get dirty.
Animal Science will be offered in two different sessions, 9a.m.-Noon for grades 1st-3rd or 1-4p.m. for grades 4th-6th, Monday-Thursday, June 20th-23rd in the Vocational building. Campers will learn about animal groups, construct projects, and play animal-related games. Instructor Leslie Prior explains that experiments will also be conducted, including some dissections. The cost is $60.
Aqua Sports will be held 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 20th-23rd in the Aquatics center. Campers will learn the skills, techniques, and rules of water polo, basketball, golf, and other water games. Campers must be able to swim 25 yards and jump in 7-foot water without fear. Instructor Laura Johnston asks campers to bring a swimsuit and be ready for a splashin' good time. This camp is for grades 4th-7th. The cost is $60.
Blastoff! 9 will be held 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 13th-16th, in the Science building. Even campers who have taken this in the past are encouraged to attend again. RLC instructor Greg Hollmann has new challenges in store for campers. This camp will help students develop a strong sense of self and connection to their environment. Each camper will create his or her own rocket. This camp is for grades 4th-7th. The cost is $75.
Cake Creations will be held 9:30-11:30a.m., Thursday, June 23rd beginning in the Children's Library at the Learning Resource Center. Parents/caregivers join their favorite "little friend" to create cupcakes, a cake and participate in activities with a "Sun, Sand, & Surf" theme. Instructor Beth Mandrell explains that children will be using icing, cookies, candies, and their imagination to add features to their cakes. The camp concludes with a parade on campus passing out some of their creations. Campers are asked to bring an apron or old shirt to camp. All tools and supplies are provided. This camp is for PreK-Kindergarten students. The cost is $15.
Comedy Camp will be held 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 27th-30th in the RLC Theater. Tracey Webb, RLC theater instructor, explains that campers will master the secrets to sketch and improv comedy, as well as theatrics, through skits and games. At week's end, campers will display their enhanced focus, creativity, confidence, teamwork, performance skills and sense of humor in a show for family and friends. This camp is for grades 4th-8th. The cost is $60.
Critter Creations will be offered twice, 9a.m.-Noon for grades 1st-3rd and 1-4p.m. for grades 4th-6th, Monday-Thursday, June 13th-16th in the Vocational building. Instructor Michelle Montgomery will share facts about wild critters that slither, swim, and fly. Campers will engage their imaginations as they draw, paint, and collage unique critters of their own. The cost is $60.
Excess Energy will be held 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 13th-16th in the RLC Sports Center. Instructor Kelly Swift describes some of the indoor and outdoor activities. She explains that campers will participate in relays, an obstacle course, dancing, and lots of other fun activities for energetic kids The emphasis will be on fun and fitness, not competition. Campers are asked to wear comfortable clothing and gym shoes. This camp is for grades 1st-3rd. The cost is $60.
Garbage Pail Science will be held 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 13th-16th in the Historic Schoolhouse. Instructor Reba Boyer explains that campers who think science is boring and hard to understand will have their minds changed forever. She says there's no homework, no paperwork, just lots of hands-on science experiments using stuff and junk. Campers will take home a folder with how-to instructions for all the camp activities. This camp is for grades 3rd-6th. The cost is $60.
Horseback Riding will be offered in three different sessions, 9a.m.-Noon, Tuesday-Thursday, June 14th-16th, June 21st-23rd, or June 28th-30th at Rend Lake Stables. Campers will ride the Trails of Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park. Matched to a suitable mount, campers will learn the proper techniques for saddling, bridling, and riding horses. Riding helmets are not required, but are suggested. Helmets are not provided by the stables. Campers are asked to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, and must bring their own beverages/snack each day. The class will be limited to 7 campers. Transportation to RLC campus will not be provided. This camp is for ages 10-14. The cost is $130.
Inside-Out Computer Camp will be offered in two different sessions. The first session will be 9a.m.-Noon, Monday-Thursday, June 13th-16th or the second session will be 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 27th-30th in the Advanced Technology Center building. Campers will discover the computer from the inside out. They will explore the interior parts of a computer processor. They will connect, install and configure the elements necessary to get a computer up and running. Campers will also learn the basics of word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software. Often considered the best part of this camp is that at the end of the camp, campers get to keep and take the computer home with them. This camp is for grades 4th-7th. The cost is $85.
Martial Arts Camp will be offered 9a.m.-Noon, Monday-Thursday, June 27th-30th at the RLC Sports Center. Campers will discover martial arts training and improve their health and coordination while learning to work with others. Instructors Lou & Al Campbell will show campers how to practice basic calisthenics and stretches; beginning stances, fundamental blocks, punches and falls that can be combined into self-defense techniques. Following the camper's mastery of falling safely to the mat, they will begin to execute throwing techniques. Campers are asked to come wearing loose fitting clothes and participate in bare feet. This camp is for grades 1st-7th. The cost is $60.
Outdoorsman Camp will be offered 9a.m.-Noon, Monday-Thursday, June 20th-23rd outside the Historic Schoolhouse. Campers will discover the skills of a naturalist, tracker, scout and hunter. They will discover mapping, survival, animal identification, tracking and field dressing abilities. Campers are asked to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes (no sandals), insect repellant, and to dress for the weather. The camp will be outdoors, rain or shine. This camp is for grades 4th-7th. The cost is $65.
Starts and Turns Swim Camp will be held 1-4p.m., Monday and Tuesday, June 27th-28th in the Aquatics Center. This camp is designed to improve the technique and efficiency of competitive swimming starts and turns. Campers will learn how to work the walls to get the best competitive swim edge over the other swimmers. Instructor Laura Johnston says that proper technique will be emphasized daily for both a grab start and a track start. In addition, each stroke turn will be practiced and refined both days of camp. This camp is for grades 1st-8th. The cost is $30.
Weird Science 1 will be offered twice. The first camp will be 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 20th-23rd. The second camp will be 9a.m.-Noon, Monday-Thursday, June 27th-30th. Both camps will be held in the Applied Science building. Campers will see volcanoes erupt, experiment with magnets, bubbles, gak, slime and other mysterious things. Instructor Cathy Sanders encourages campers to join her for a week of discovery during this "hands-on" camp. This camp is for grades 1st-3rd. The cost is $60.
Weird Science 2 will also be offered twice. The first camp will be 9a.m.-Noon, Monday-Thursday, June 20th-23rd. The second camp will be 1-4p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 27th-30th in the Applied Science building. According to instructor Cathy Sanders, this camp offers more weird experiments, more messes, and more fun. Campers will discover science by using pulleys, hammering, measuring, problem solving, making parachutes, and lots of hands-on activities. This camp is for grades 1st-3rd. The cost is $60.
Parents have the option to extend the camp day by letting their campers attend both a morning and afternoon camp session. RLC staff collect campers at the end of their morning camp, supervise their lunch and drop them off at their afternoon camp. Supervised Lunch is $3 per day. Parents drop their camper off at their 9a.m. morning camp and pick them up from their afternoon session at 4p.m. Campers need to bring a sack lunch and beverage each day.
