Christopher Fire Chief Charles Lutes said the American Red Cross has established a fund to help a family whose home was destroyed by fire on Friday.
Lutes said the fire broke out at 8 p.m. Friday at a home in the 600 block of W. Helen St.
Resident Jonathan Love told firefighters he had been cooking dinner for his family when something spilled onto the stove, causing a grease fire.
Love tried to put out the fire with a pan of water, Lutes said, which caused the flames to spread.
After calling 911, Love tried to put out the fire by using a garden hose before firefighters arrived on scene, Lutes said.
The mobile home was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, Lutes said.
“The family lost everything in the fire and does not have insurance,” Lutes said. “We contacted the American Red Cross, who put them up for the night because they had no place to go.
“Six people lived in the home including Love, his wife, three children and another family member,” he said.
“We understand that the American Red Cross has set up an account to help the Love family at the Banterra Bank of Christopher.”
Lutes said adding water to a grease fire does not extinguish the flames.
“Water just causes the flames to splatter and ignite other materials,” he said.
“We urge residents to smother grease fires with a heavy rug, a jacket or anything that would cut off the air supply.”
He said he keeps a dry chemical extinguisher in the kitchen in the event of a grease fire.
