Thompsonville man injured in Franklin County wreck

A two-vehicle accident closed a portion of state Route 34 North near the Saline and Franklin county line Wednesday morning.

Saline County Central Dispatch received a transferred 911 call from Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at 11:15 a.m. reporting a tractor-trailer and truck had crashed.

Donald L. King, 68, Thompsonville, failed to yield at the intersection of Macedonia Road and state Route 34 and collided with a semi driven by Timothy Allen Melvin, 36, West Frankfort, according to a media release from Illinois State Police District 13 of Du Quoin.

King was flown by Air Evac helicopter to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., with major injuries, according to the release. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Melvin was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. Both vehicles were towed.

King was cited on a charge of failure to yield at an intersection.

Saline County Sheriff’s Deputies, Med-Force EMS, Cave Eastern Fire Department, Illinois State Police District 13 and 19 and Cardinal EMS responded to the scene, according to a release from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.

Illinois 34 near Franklin County Road was closed until about 2:30 p.m.
