Benton Public Library will hold its second annual Family Reading Night on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White, and the Illinois State Library. Parents and children are welcome to join us to celebrate the joys of reading with stories and activities.
This year’s program features Sami the Bug Girl! Sami is seven years old and has been studying bugs for four years. She currently has a tarantula, scorpion, caterpillars, chrystalis‚ and an ever growing family of Deathhead and Madagascar hissing cockroaches.
Sami also has a large collection of bug friends that have moved on to be part of her permanent collection.
She enjoys sharing those as well.
She has been a guest speaker at the Science Center in Carbondale and at multiple schools and libraries. Sami wants to share her love of the bug world with other kids and teach
them not to be afraid. She brings all her bugs with her to let her new friends experience her pets.
She will make a power point presentation explaining bug related facts.
Every child can receive a special entomology starter kit Sami assembles herself including a cricket and potato for food. Everyone who attends will also receive a bookmark from the Secretary of
State.
Refreshments will be provided. Library staff will be on hand to lead activities and read stories.
