A Valier man died at 4 a.m. Saturday after being struck by a car on Interstate 57.

Troy A. Williams was pronounced dead by Franklin County Coroner Marty P. Leffler at the scene of the accident, the northbound lanes of I-57 at milepost 72.

An Illinois State Police accident reconstructionist was dispatched to the scene. The odor of alcohol was evident from Williams, Leffler said.

Williams was taken to the Franklin Hospital in Benton by Cardinal EMS ambulance. Leffler ordered X-rays and drew fluid from Williams to be sent to AIT Laboratory for toxicology testing.

According to Leffler, Franklin County Sheriff's Department dispatch said a 911 call came in at 3:18 a.m. from a semitrailer driver saying that a person was in the northbound lanes of I-57 just north of the 72-mile marker.

Just a few seconds later, another 911 call was received saying that a person had been struck by a vehicle near the same location as the previous call.

A report by the Illinois State Police said Williams, 36, a pedestrian, was struck by a northbound passenger car driven by Thomas S. Edwards, 44, of Augusta, Ga.

Edwards was wearing a seat belt and received no injuries. A passenger in Edwards' vehicle, Pamela Shepley, 44, also was not injured.

They were traveling from Georgia to Iowa, Leffler said, adding that Edwards said "he did not see Mr. Williams until it was too late, and he struck him."

"Mr. Williams was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, which made it almost impossible to be visible. Nobody expects to see a person walking on the interstate and especially at that time of day," Leffler said.

Edwards' car received major damage and was towed to Abbott's Auto Service.

No charges are pending, the police report said.

"Mr. Williams lived with his parents in Valier and also leaves two brothers," Leffler said. "Please uplift this family in your prayers."

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.
