Veterans and family members, local residents and dignitaries braved the chilly weather Tuesday morning as Benton VFW and American Legion posts observed Veterans Day.
“At the 11th hour of the 11th day, the Armistice was signed at the end of World War I — the war to end all wars,” said Commander John Metzger, VFW Post 2671, during a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial located outside the Benton Municipal Building. “As we all know, that did not occur, and there has been a progression of wars since then.
“Today, we honor all veterans of all wars, for it is the American veterans who have made the sacrifices for our freedom,” Metzger said.
State Sen. Gary Forby gave further credit to the men and women who have served their country: “If it wasn’t for the people in uniform, we wouldn’t be here today.”
