Benton, Ill. -

The Dec. 29 early morning fire that destroyed Chief’s Towing and Recovery, 7745 Route 37 South, in Benton caused a minor interruption, according to owner Lawrence Schofield.

“We are still in business and plan to rebuild in the same location,” Schofield said. “I have incoming phone calls transferred to my cell phone. The fax machine is still down, but that is only a minor inconvenience for us.”

Schofield said he worked for Abbott’s Auto Service for four years before opening his own business four months ago.

“We named the business Chief’s Towing and Recovery because we have a lot of Indian heritage,” Schofield said. “I also have a lot of experience. I operated an AAA Auto Club service for 10 years in Arizona. I worked with my father, Lawrence Schofield Sr., for another 20 years in the towing and recovery business.”

He said his assistant, Jennifer Overman, “helps me with every situation.”

“There are three other people involved in Chief’s Towing and Recovery. My nephews, Christopher, Justin and Matthew Schofield also work for the company,” he said.

The towing service is a 24-hour operation, Schofield said.

“We honor most of the auto clubs and will respond to calls from anywhere,” he said. “We have the trailer to haul cars, trucks, machinery and motorcycles.

“We specialize in lockouts, winchouts, jump-starts, tire changes and offer other miscellaneous services,” he said. “We are proud of the fact that we are the home of $30 tows for residents who live inside the city limits of Benton and West City.”

Nick-named “Little Buff,” Schofield said Chief’s Towing and Recovery does not take a holiday.
“We will answer your call 365 days a year,” he said.
