3 killed in Pope County wreck

POPE COUNTY -- Three people died as the result of a two-car wreck near Herod early Sunday morning, according to multiple agencies.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m., Illinois State Police, the Pope County Sheriff's Office, and other emergency departments responded to a report of a head-on two-car collision on Illinois 34 near Williams Hill Road.

According to those investigating the crash, the driver of a 2007 Dodge Charger driving one direction crossed the centerline, striking a limousine traveling the other direction head-on.

The Dodge Charger was on fire when emergency responders arrived, according to investigators.

Both drivers died at the scene, according to investigators, and one passenger from the limousine died at an area hospital.

Harrisburg Fire Department responded to a request for mutual aid from Pope County Fire District. HFD reported that multiple air ambulances and vehicular ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

According to HFD, the road remained closed until about 8 a.m.

The identities of those who died in the wreck have not been released.

According to Harrisburg Fire Department, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
