MARION -- Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) is lauding news released this week by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity regarding the awarding of over $1.4 million in Community Development Block Grants in the 117th district.

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program is one of the longest continuously run programs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Although federally funded, DCEO administers the program, and awards funds to support local community development activities such as affordable housing, anti-poverty programs, and infrastructure development.

"I am grateful to DCEO for choosing cities in the 117th district for important housing rehabilitation projects," Severin said. "The funding awards made possible by these grants will beautify neighborhoods, clean up blighted properties, and literally put roofs over the heads of our fellow Southern Illinoisans."

In total, 39 projects throughout Illinois received CDBG funding. Three of those are from Severin's district.

Marion, Johnston City, and Christopher will each get $482,040 to rehabilitate 10 housing units in the respective communities.
