Plans to build Carbondale's first dog park are moving forward, but first, organizers need to fetch some additional funding.

Supporters of the project, along with their furry friends, were on hand Monday afternoon at Parrish Park to formally unveil the planned location for the 2.5-acre park immediately adjacent to the LIFE Community Center.

Those behind the planning of the park hope to raise $86,500 to construct the facility and add amenities including fencing, drinking fountains, spray hydrants, a shelter, landscaping and a play structure for the pooches, among others.

With the unveiling of the site, now marked with a sign for the public to see, organizers also are planning a "Carbondale Dog Park Donation Day" for this coming Wednesday, Oct. 16. The day will be focused on jump-starting the capital campaign to raise funds for the park, and will include an open house and public meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Downtown Design Center. The open house will feature displays of drawings of the planned park, as well as an update on its progress.

Also ongoing is the "Lucky Dog Raffle," with a range of items up for grabs. Raffle tickets are available at the LIFE Community Center, Carbondale Main Street and Cristaudo's. The raffle drawing will be held between 3 and 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at Longbranch.
