Chester High School English teacher Mike Springston has been awarded a $500 grant from the IEA Foundation -- the second consecutive year he has won a SCORE grant for an electronic recycling drive.

This year's event, sponsored by the CHS Rhetoric and Composition class, will be held Nov. 2 in the high school parking lot. If a high school football playoff game falls on that day, the drive will be moved to the grade school parking lot.

The city of Chester and Randolph County are contributing funds and the Gilster-Mary Lee Corp. is providing a forklift.

SCORE (or Schools and Community Outreach by Educators) is an IEA Foundation grant program specifically aimed at teachers in the first 10 years of their careers. More than 300 grants have been awarded since 2013 across the state. All of the projects benefited students, their families and their communities.

"We're thrilled another year of this wonderful program resulted n a range of ideas submitted by our members and we are so pleased with such creative effort," said IEA President Kathi Griffin.

"We know that our educators are in the schools every day giving 100%, but there are unmet needs as well," Griffin added. "So many of them want to do more."

The IEA represents 135,000 teachers, education support professionals, high education faculty and staff, retired educators and students planning to become teachers.
