DU QUOIN -- The Du Quoin Knights of Columbus will be conducting its annual Tootsie Roll Drive for Special Olympics next weekend (Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21).

Since the 1970s, the KCs have assisted with Special Olympic events for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. The Knights have also assisted inestablishing homes and training for these individuals throughout the state.

KC Council 1298 in Du Quoin supports both the Special Olympics and Five Star Industries in town.

This year's Tootsie Roll Drive proceeds will go to support Five Stars Wishing Well Fund. The fund helps individuals to buy things like shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, and clothing, as well as extras like DVDs, hair perms, birthday and Christmas presents.

Monies raised for the Special Olympics supports activities that provide recreational athletic programs for participants through the region. Du Quoin has been the host for winter indoor softball and baseball tournaments. These programs help raise needed funds to also assist the Special Olympics.

The KCs will make visits at area businesses next weekend to seek contributions to the cause. If an individual or business would like to make a donation to the drive, please call Grand Knight Al Martin at 618-534-5227. The Knights are thankful to be a part of the statewide fundraising program and assist those individuals in the community who need help.
