Police seek participants for academy

The Carbondale Police Department is taking applications for its basic citizens police academy class.

The purpose of the academy is to develop positive relations, and a better understanding and communication between the police and the community through education. Citizens will gain an appreciation of the problems and challenges facing law enforcement and have an opportunity to offer comments and ideas regarding solutions.

The basic academy will have five sessions and will focus on an overview of police department divisions, low-level patrol tactics and traffic stops, and an introduction to investigations and crime scenes. Classes will be held Sept. 25, Oct. 9, Oct. 23, Nov. 6 and Nov. 13. All sessions run from 6 to 9 p.m.

The academy is free, and anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to apply for the class. Every applicant will undergo a background check. Persons i nterested should contact Officer Randy Mathis at 457-3200 ext. 402 or rmathis@explore carbondale.com.

Applications are available on the city's website at explore carbondale.com or at the Carbondale Police Department. Applications are due by Friday, Sept. 20.
